Originally from Manila, Philippines John moved to Los Angeles at the age of five and grew up immersed in the diverse inner-city neighborhoods of Historic Filipinotown, Echo Park, and Koreatown. Although thousands of miles from the Philippines, John retained his native fluency in both Tagalog and Cebuano thanks to his family who proudly spoke it at home. He was so interested in developing deeper fluency in Tagalog that he pursued advanced studies in the language while he was undergrad at UCLA and even lived in Manila after college. John holds a BA in English literature from UCLA and a Masters in Teaching (TESOL/second language acquisition focus) from the USC Rossier School of Education. He is currently in library school looking to specialize in ethnic studies collections development and help communities access more literature about underrepresented immigrant communities.
